Bright, medium tension flats with a smooth feel?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

So I'm looking for recommendations as to what flats to buy. First off let me say that I LOVE TI flats, however I play in a rock band, and I dig in way too much for those low tension flats especially live.

That being said I'm looking for a set of flats that are bright with higher tension than the TI's but not too stiff or sticky feeling.

The Rotosound Steve Harris strings are the kind of brightness I'm going for but I hear the tension of those are pretty high.
Maybe the standard rotosound flats? Ernie Balls?

Price isn't really a factor, thanks guys!

I use Lakland Osborns (GHS Precisions).

When I hear "bright" and "flats" together, I always think of D'Addario Chromes. I'm not sure what you consider to be medium tension, but they come in 40-95, 45-100, or 50-105 sets.

You can get a lighter gauge set of Rotos than the Steve Harris set, but they're still pretty darn stiff. Or maybe I'm just a wimp.

I was thinking Chromes but something tells me I tried them before and wasn't a fan. I could totally be imagining that though.

Any word on Sadowsky Flats?

Stainless Steel Fender 9050's come in M (105), ML (100) and L (95). I tried the ML, but had an issue with the D string. It kind of hardened after some time.

You're just imagining it!

Chromes rock, try the 45-100 set if you're concerned about tension. I've been using the 50-105 set for years and love them but I use pretty heavy strings on everything and I'm used to them. Big strings = big tone...all you guys using 40-90 girly strings can argue all you want, it doesn't change the physics

Sadowskys are great too, maybe not quite as bright as the Chromes, but lovely feel to them.

Chromes!

I love Sadowskys but I wouldn't call them bright, they are very clear and growly but lack the upper mids that the Chromes accentuate.
