| Bright Strings for Godin A5?

I am looking for strings for my Godin A5 fretless. I've searched through the string section and saw a lot about the TI flats, but I'm not looking for that sound.
The Godin comes with flatwound D"Addario strings (I think). I took them off ASAP and used the LaBella nylon wraps for a while, to get that "upright" sound. I now have an upright bass, so I wanted to try something different on the A5.
On a whim I put some cheap ($12) nickel round wounds strings on it. (I think they were Austin's ?) I really like the brightness and tension from them. The tone and timbre from the E and B are like plucking on piano strings if you know what I mean.
My concern is that if I leave them on, they will chew up the finger board. Even though it's Ebony, I can see marks on the board already.
So I'm thinking of trying Nickel half rounds or ground wounds. I have nickel RotoSound ground wounds on my '53 RI Pbass and I like the feel and sound. But I'm interested in any other string choices and experiences that other TBers have had. Thanks in advance for the replies.
