GH Brite-Flats are technically "Ground Wounds" or "Half Rounds" since they started as Round Wounds and were ground into a flat surface. |

Still, they settle into a decidedly 'mellow' tonal profile (in my opinion). Its like the true highs are scooped out, but there's still some of the high-mids that allow for great note definition in a thumpy string!
Those Monel Steel Rotosounds are the brightest flats I've used- almost not flat sounding! They stay bright-sounding for a long time, too. |

The tension others mention shouldn't be a bother if you're shooting for those said gauges. I recommend D'Addario Chromes, though. With the tone knob maxed, the Chromes offer more growl and roundwound flavor (if you will) than the Roto 77s. The Rotos, from my experience, have a distinct sound to them which almost seems "flat." It is as though they are like a jack-of-all-trades kind of flatwound where they excel in no particular field, and yet, are able to do everything within reasonable amounts. I probably got a bad set though (at the time) so don't take my account of Rotos to heart. |

My EAB bridge and top bubbled when I put on Roto's.

They go dead rather quickly but they have a very bright high end that doesn't go away. But if you mean bright like rounds, the closest flat to that I've used are by far the TI Jazz Flats. I hated them, but those who use them love them like religion.

They just have a presence to them that makes them very 'clear and clean' sounding in comparison to most darker sounding flats. They also seem to lack in the low end and low mids department, which makes them sound brighter than they really are.
I actually just took the TI's I had on my P off and threw on a new set of Chromes. The Chromes basically sound like rounds straight out of the package, but with less grind and more thump. They also emphasize their low end and low mids a lot more than the TI's, so they sound more like traditional flats but with some modern, round sparkle on top. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
