tracy,
honest to god, no bs...to make any strings zing like you just bought them, (making your $60 last more than 4 weeks) just take 'em off when they're not too zingy anymore, (while they're off, clean your neck and fret board and all the dead skin from around your pick-ups...ewww!! - true tho' eh??) and pop them into boiling water, in a pan on the stove (coiled to get 'em in) and leave them simmer for about an hour...drain them in the sink and let them cool right down...pop e'em on , tune 'em up and they'll zing like Claypool's ...I've found that spagetti doesn't tune up so well tho'..you cant even get a good B!!!!...

slap happy
oh yeah...here's les going mental....

In order of brightness - same bass, same amp, same player. Went through 6 different makes of strings in 2 weeks to answer this question, then gigged with them to see how long they lasted. Bear in mind I like bright strings and our band gets very hot and sweaty. You may get longer out of the strings than me.

1. D'adarrio Prisms - brighter than the midday sun (3 to 4 gigs and then bin)
2. DM Blue Steels - 11 in the morning bright (2 gigs and in the bin)
3. Trace Elliots - bright but very rough windings and despite correct gauges they required a lot of tension to pull them into tune - may have been a bad set ? (didn't gig, gave 'em away)
4. DM SLP - 10 am ish, but tend not to dull as quickly as any of the above. (15 + gigs)
5. Elite's - ok, good well rounded sound (5+ gigs)
6. Ernie Ball POS's - as bright as the dark side of the moon - sorry I just didn't like 'em. I tried to like them, everyone says they are great, but not for me.. (didn't gig)

Haven't tried the elixers, but if someone would like to send some to the IOM for me...

I got some white label (unbranded nickel strings) cheap ($10 a set) which were as bright as the SLP's but a lot cheaper (not gigged - they're on my 'extra' fretless)

If you want your strings to last longer do a quick TB search on 'boiling strings'.

Hope this is of some use.
