Broke a string in the middle today..this is a first for me

I restrung my P Bass with Ernie Ball Cobalts 2 weeks ago. We had an afternoon gig (it is bikeweek down here in FL) and I broke the G string right in half. I have had an old string break at the bridge before, I rarely break strings...but this sucker is 2 weeks old.

I never carry a backup, but had the set that came off so at least string was precut and ready to go. The last set of Cobalts lasted me about 4 months. From now on I am carrying a backup.

I've been playing for 40 years and have never broken a string. But for it to break in the middle definitely sounds like a defect.

Update: Ernie ball is sending me a replacement for free. That is customer service.
