Buying an assortment: Suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all-

I'm about to buy a bunch of strings from JustStrings for my SR705, and I want to get an assortment to sort of test the water and find out what I like. I'm a big fan of Dunn and Jameson and have been playing on La Bella flats for a while. I like them but I'm trying to move into funkier (e.g Jamiroquai's Zender) stuff so I'm getting into rounds. Also, I play fingerstyle, if that helps.

Suggestions? I'm sold on some Roto 66's but I'm looking for three or four other solid brands.

Thanks!
Benjamin

Are you committed to buying from JustStrings strictly?

Yes, try a set of Skip's Circle K strings; they are well worth the trial.

DR, i suggest lo-riders or long necks. If you want to try some coated strings DR xtra life are nice as well.

I'm sure somebody will laugh at this, my new favorites are Black Diamond Nickel Rounds medium. Cheap, warmer than many round wounds, and long lasting.

Hmm, 5-string. Here's what I recommend, in order of brightness with the most bright first:

DR DDT .045 - .125
DR Nickel Lo-Riders .045 - .125
Thomastik-Infeld Superalloy .045 - .125
SIT Silencers .045 - .120

That will give you a wide range of tones.

The DDTs are steel, the rest are nickel.

Well, If you want roundwounds, you might try Hi-Beams.
But I have a unique theory. The less you spend, the closer you are to retirement. The sooner you retire, the more time you have to get better at your instrument. So if you use flats, your frets will get eaten much more slowly. Plus flats won't have ridges which won't slow you down. I saw get DAddrio flats.
Rrrrroudrounds have ridddddges!
