Question C tuning and Flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

Been playing rounds for 10 years - but I've always liked the sound of flats.
So now I'm looking to go flat on one of my 34" P-basses, keeping the other one on rounds.
BUT;
I tune to C, F, A#, D#.

I tried flats before, and the clankiness and low tension drove me back to rounds.
Which flats will do the job with a decent tension for a 'dig-in' kind of fingerstyle?

Thanks guys and gals!

maybe an extra light 5 string set? you could toss the "G" and then tune the lowest 5 up a half step. Or have your local shop order you singles in the appropriate sizes.

Yeah I'd thought about that - any brands worth looking at?

You sure you're talking about flats? "Clankiness" is something I'd associate with steel rounds (or rounds in general).
Also, flats normally have higher tension than rounds of the same gauge.

My La Bella Standard set (with 105 E-string) does a wonderful job when tuned down, but maybe the Jamerson set, which is real heavy, will do the trick for you?

Yeah - they're on my bass right now.
RE: Clank
I guess it comes to getting the right tension - I've found the rounds that work for me, but not the flats just yet.

I used them in the studio bout 2 weeks ago, with a bit of success, but just wanted a bit more tension down in C tuning.
I only tune down in C - so my bottom is important to me.
I *think* they're chromes, but I can't quite remember.....

So the Jamerson's are pretty tight?

How do they feel to the sliding fret fingers?
I like to do a lot of slides and bends. They good for this too?
