Can TI Jazz Flat .136 handle sharp break angle @ bridge?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know people have reported stringing TI Jazz Flats through-body without problems, but my bass has the 2Tek bridge which has a very sharp break angle just past the saddle, and that .136 low B is mighty fat and non-tapered... Anyone done this successfully? I'd hate to waste such an expensive string. Thx!

I have no earthly idea. Go to the distributer (www.connollyandco.com) and get their email address and see what they say. I have eyeballed that same set myself for my 5 string Carvin B5 bass, but I have a hipshot bridge that will not take anything over a .126 B string unless it's one of those taperwound things.
I could unwind a bit of the outer layer like I did on my previous Chromes set and convert it to a taperwound, but I do not want to that with an eighty dollar set.
Best of luck and hope you get it sorted out. .136 does seem like a very thick string to bend at that kind of angle, but I have used the 4 string set on my body-thrus without difficulty.
Best of luck,
FG

Thanks for that link--I just left them a phone message with this question.

Anyone else try this, with success or failure?

35 to 40 degree angle?

Bongo,

I have a Hamer Cruise Jazz 5 with the 2-Tek bridge and have had TI Jazz Flats with the .136 B installed for about a year and no problem.

Even had them off and on once to try some other strings.

Looks like the break angle through the bridge is about 35 to 40 degrees.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Hmm....dimentia is catching up to me.

Ha, just reread your post. Short term memory didn't retain the fact you have the 2-Tek also.

Should be OK.

You'll love the tone.

Sweet! Talk about getting exactly the info needed. Yeah I have a Hamer Cruise J5 too, isn't it just a killer bass? Mine has been de-fretted, and it just snarls.

Ain't I Blessed?

Didn't have to defret my Hamer - also scored a a J4 fretless on TB.

It has EMG's - I don' think these are the factory electronics - not the BassLines like on my J5.

I have TI flats on it also.

Wish it were a 5, but I do like the thinner neck - much less chunky than on the 5.

I play the J5 with the one tone knob at midway and both pickups at same volume through a MoBass set flat driving a BagEnd 210 and an Accugroove Gordo 18 inch sub and I'd describe the tone as mellow. I do have a fairly gentle fingerstyle touch. Interesting your comment that it just snarls.

Take care.

On second thought..............

Could be the fretted compared to fretless?

But, I'd describe my J4 fretless as mellow too - course, I don't dig in much.

Well, the thing with mine is the frets were ground down (instead of pulled out), so there's a bit of metal at the surface of the fingerboard; plus right now it's wearing roundwounds; and this one has the Basslines. So, yeah, it snarls like it's going to bite your hand off. It will be interesting to see how the flats change its character (they're in the mail on their way to me).
