Can you recommend strings for a fretless MM Stingray?

Hi all,

I recently bought a fretless Stingray from a fellow TB-er and the bass is on the way to me in Oz. I'm pretty excited.

My big concern is the choice of strings to put on her. The previous owner had DR low beams on the bass, but I'm interested in something that'll give me the "Pino" Stingray sound.

I've heard a lot of good things about D'Addario Chromes on TB, and wondered if they would be a good choice to give me that trademark singing "mwah" tone a fretless Stingray is renowned for.

I currently have several basses strung with a variety of strings, but my go to basses are my Fender 62 RI Precision, strung with TI Jazz flats, my 30th Anni Stingray strung with TI Jazz flats and my MIJ Fender 75 RI Jazz bass strung OEM with Fender rounds.

I love TI Jazz flats, but am not sure they will give me the tone I am seeking.

Thoughts?

Cheers

Andy

1. TI Jazz Flats
2. Ernie Ball flatwounds
3. D'Addario Chromes
4. Rotosound Jazz Bass flats

These all work great, but have a very different feel. Know what you're getting into. Chromes are generally good all-around.

If you like the low tension of the TIs, you'll like the way DR sunbeam nickle rounds feel. They have lot's of controllable mwah on my fretless jazz, much more versitile than the TI flats, or any other flats. Very little (if any) fretboard wear, if that's a concern.
