Carvin (la bella) 4511 vs D'Addario EXL165

OK I don’t ever do the "VS" thing, but I thought it was worth it this time.

I bought a used Geddy Lee Fender over a month ago and thought I would put some new strings on it, the music store was out of the D'addario's so I went over to Carvin and grabbed there nickel 45-105 instead, figuring nickels are nickels, and their cheaper as well. Now I’ve heard the Geddy Lee’s are known for twang but after practice the other night I just couldn’t handle the “clank” and fret buzz overtones anymore. The bass punched pretty good, but that might have been EQ’ing, The low frequencies just seemed overwhelmed by the high/high mid overtones? I was hoping the strings would settle in but they never did. I was starting to consider putting some “even more” vintage sounding pups in! Instead I finally put on some EXL165 and “Wow what bump”, it made a huge difference with tighter and more focused lows that were not overwhelmed by clank and fret buzz. I mean the snap with the Carvins was good and better for the occasional slap, but I know the EXL are fine enough for that. Only problem is I need the superlong EXL’s which I believe come in 45-105?? The taper on the E begins halfway in the nut groove…(Badass Bridge on the GL), but seems to not effect the tone of the open E.

Anyway, thought I would share.

I have used both. I like both. However, compared to the D'Addarios, The Cavin"s life expectancy were less. I did not, however encounter the problem with the sound that you are having. I guess how you EQ it does make a difference.
It seems that D'Addario makes the 34 inch scale regular strings "just long enough". If there is no effect with the sound I wouldn't worry about it. I use them occacsionally on my fretless 5 string, and even though it loads through the bridge, the silk windings will go slightly past the nut over the fretboard. I 'll use the superlong version the next time I string it up with them.

I think Fender 7250 Nickels are a very musical string. They have highs but they are pleasant and seem to go well with maple boards IME. And you can go 45-100 or 45-105. DA XLs can kinda screem instead of sing on maple boards particularly when new.
