changing g string gauge only

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a stingray 4 string and want to change the g string to a thicker gauge to get more volume from it.

Should I change the entire set of strings to a heavier gauge or is it ok to leave the rest and just change the g?

I am just concerned about imblalnce of tension etc?

Thanks.

IMHO, I dont think you have to worry. Just watch how the heavier string fits in the nut-you might have to file it a bit if the new one is way heavier than the old one.

No problem. Play mix-n-match all you want. Unless you make substantial changes, the action shouldn't move.

And I darn sure wouldn't file a nut unless I was sure that I'd never go back to a smaller gauge string....or was willing to repair the nut if I did so. Of course, on the G and E you do stand a chance of cracking the nut if you try to cram a grossly oversize string into the slot. Judgment is called for.

In any case, the old baking soda and super glue trick is available.

I see no problem, i do it the other way, we play in low B, So i end up getting 5-string bass strings, and skipping the 4th..

I had to adjust my bridge a little, but other than that its fine

Have you tried angling your pickup height so that the treble side is closer to the strings?

I went from a roundwound 45-105(Fender 8250's) to a hybrid round/flat (d' addario half rounds) in a 50-105 gauge. I had to tighten the truss rod about a quarter turn because the A string was buzzing problem solved.
