changing string companies. SIT=> awesome

Sign in to disble this ad
after using the same strings for over a decade, i have recently changed over to SIT strings, and i gotta say, they are awesome, so far.

for a long time SIT has been pretty much the only game in town for lower-than-low-b strings, so i've been using their .165's forever for low f#, and even experimented with the .195's a bit too, but just last week i got my first shipment of their full sets, and i have to say i'm very pleased with the tone and feel.

for the longest time, the only 7 string sets offered were not the best gauges, so when i got my strings from dean markley i would have to get individual custom gauges. about 5 years ago i told bill conklin about the gauges that i used - lighter in the a, d and g than the standard gauges at the time, and heavier on the low f#, low b and high c/b and f/e, and he contacted SIT and got them to make him sets with those gauges that he now sells from his site.

ironically, instead of ordering individual strings with my prefered gauges, now i get conklin sets from SIT that have the gauges that i have always used but had to originally get special order from dean markley. so if you get a custom conklin, you are probably getting one with the SIT strings on it, with my gauges . i tried to get bill to put my initials on the box or something but he won't return my calls heh.

they are exposed core, and normally i haven't been a fan of exposed core (i liked tapers, down to the last winding) but the tone of these guys is really sweet, so i think i'm a happy convert. we'll see how they hold up over time.

the gauges i use now for my 7/8 strings are .165"-.135"-.110"-.080"-.055"-.-35"-.030"-.025", stainless, and very present, bright and aggressive.

I had a set of SIT flats on my bass for about 30 minutes. The low B was horrendous.

I'm glad you are happy with the rounds, though.

Hell, any string manufacturer should get wood knowing that you'll be restringing all of those monsters with their brand. They can buy another Porsche.

SIT are great strings and last a long time. I just changed my set of silencers after 7 months only because the E lost a bit of bite...i could of swapped it and played the set on it since the rest still sound great.

SIT's rule. bassbully- I'm a dedicated Silencers user, myself. Tried loads of strings on my Warwick Corvette (Ernie Ball Slinkys, Smith Compressors, DR Lo-Riders, Ritter Swordsteels) and SIT Silencers are the best. The tone, feel, smoothness, everything is perfect for me.

Even after 6 months, those strings have a nice wooliness to them, like an old comfortable blankie.

The price is right on them too.

+1 I couldnt agree more...these are gret strings and very affordable. I really love the feel and tone and have never broke one. I think alot of TBers should try them they dont know what they are missing.

how do the silencers sound compared to rounds? I've been curious about those strings, but have yet to try them. I love SIT rounds, am looking at a set of flats for my 4 string jazz and maybe a set of silencers for my 5 string...but I don't want to lose the ability to play some slap wanking crap on it....

although i am not much of a slapper i dont think silencers are great for slap ...i would stick to SIT rounds. Silencers give a roundish sound tone but not as bright as true rounds. My new Jazz came with the Factory Fender pros on it and it sounds great slappin it comparing it to my fender 5 with silencers and i just changed the silencers a week ago.But then again i dont think my Fender 5 would sound good slapped with any strings ..rounds etc ..its just to mellow sounding.

I like the slap tone from Silencers. It's more of a throaty, beefy old-school style slap tone (like Larry Graham or Louis Johnson) and not the more modern twinky slap tone like Marcus Miller.

I'm an SIT endorser. I love them. I use their flats, and Nickel Brights. Fantastic, long lasting tone. Great folks, as well.
