Changing strings = new setup?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am having my bass set up and should be picking it up soon. I asked the man at the shop to set it up in Drop C (CGCF) with .110 gauge strings. He called me and told me he didn't get the strings in stock so he will be setting it up with Elixer .100 strings.

Basically my question is, If I take off the .100 gauge Elixer strings and replace them with .110 gauge Ernie Ball strings. Will I have to set up the bass any after changing the strings? (no changing of tuning)

Do you think .100 Elixers can handle Drop C?

I always check my intonation & setup whenever I change strings, even to the exact same brand, model, & gauge. More often than not, something needs to be tweaked.

Yes.

If the feel doesn't change, the intonation will.

That's a huge difference. I'd tell him not to do anything if he can't get the strings you want. A .100 is very light for me and I'm used to .105 in standard tuning. Hell, I find a .104 LaBella light gauge set to feel too light for me, so that much of a difference is definitely going to pose problems.

OP, i wouldn't do it with .100. tell the guy to wait. and like johnMCA said, i always check it out after i restring even with the same brand, gauge, material. sometimes it needs a tweak, maybe not.

I agree: Your guitar tech is either sloppy and careless...or he just doesn't know any better.

Either way, there is in fact a big difference between a .110 gauge string and a .100 string - especially in drop C tuning!

If you allow this guy to proceed, I predict you will NOT be happy with the results. Unless you urgently need this bass back ASAP - regardless of string gauge - I also would tell him to hold off until he can do the job properly...as originally requested.

I use C#F#BE tuning, and I wouldn't think of using anything less then .110

The strings would be flopping around, unless you had a 35" scale.

I recently had my (4 string) bass dropped to B standard, and went with a .125 for the B. I'll go with a .130 on my next pack of strings without a doubt. It doesn't sound bad, but it's looser than I'd like it it be. Definitely tell him to wait on the right strings.

Ignore the trolls that frequent this forum.

And yes, you would probably need another setup with those strings. That's why I always go into my tech with the exact strings I want on each bass.

I have used .50-.110 for years on a CGCF tuned bass and no it is not floppy and out of tune if you have it done properly and with the right strings.
