If a string snaps do you change all the strings or just the broken one?

It hasn't happened to me in years, but I would change the whole set out. I prefer my strings to wear uniformly....at least as uniformly as possible. By putting a fresh string on a bass with older strings sounds unbalanced to me.

I used to break strings by the week almost, thanks to a crappy bridge and tuner, and then I would just change the one string, but since I have decent basses, I change them uniformly, though they don't really manage to break since I change them before every gig!

I haven't broken a string in almost 2 years but due to a lucky eBay buy of 20+ sets of my favorite strings for about $8 a set, I change the entire set as soon as they start deadening.

But if I broke a string on a gig, I would replace the single string only and then change the rest at home.

I find that bass is different than guitar when it comes to single string changes. If the rest of your set is broken in, the new string sounds noticably bright.

I would probably change the whole set, assuming it wasn't some freak accident and the strings are fairly old.

I agree with Baird, in that bass is different than guitar for single string changes. You can really tell the different between the new string and the other broken in ones, but I would assume it's because the bass uses less effects, and therefore tone is much more dependent on the bass and strings than a guitar, who will make his tone from effects.

Just a thought.
