Changing strings- a question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello everyone, I am currently playing a MIM Fender Jazz Bass through a Fender Bassman 150 Combo amp. Nothing special but it sounds great and I'm happy with it.
I just changed the strings to La Bella Hard Rockin' Steel Roundwounds.

I have a question; does it matter if the actual string touches the machine head? I tried to leave enough excess silk for each string but the E string touches the head.

The E string plus the others all sound fine but I just want to know if the E will be a problem in the future. Any answers would be greatly apreciated.

Are those standard "long scale" Labella Hard Rockin' Steels? I've used Dean Markley SR2000 on my Fender Jazz and it looked identical on the E string. I never had a single problem with it but I'd always heard that if the heavy wound portion of the string starts wrapping around the tuning post it could cause breakage at that point.

HUH If that were true i would break every E and B string i ever put on. I have done this and never broke a string. I rarely get the silk to make it on a E or B if i use strings with it. Since i now use all SIT strings there are no silk just wrap em on and keep em low on the post ...no problems.

No, because some strings are only steel, no thread, so...

thank you for your replies. i forget where but i read that if the silk wrap wasn't touching the head that the string would certainly break. the strings haven't matured quite yet but everything sounds good so far
