Cheap string sets

Sign in to disble this ad
I came accross some very cheap string sets at the site of the German Music Store. A set with four roundwounds for only 8 Euros ($12,-) sounds too cheap to believe. A five string set goes for 10 Euros. I don't know who makes them, as the package only says "Music Store Bass Strings". Does anybody have any experience with those strings?

Why buy cheap strings? It's not like bass strings have to be replaced frequently.
Spend a little more and get good strings.

That's what I said when I purchased a set of Thomastik roundwounds for just over $60 in late June. Sumbitches popped on me last week so I slapped back on the previous set of 6 month old, $15 GHS Bass Boomers. They feel and sound just as good, IMO...

Normally I'm a flatwounder (new word?). I normally change strings if one of them doesn't sound or feel like it should do. For a set of d'Addario flats I usually pay about $30, which isn't a problem at all. I was just intrested, whether there is someone who has experience with those strings. The price difference is so huge that it makes one very curious.

As mentioned, that really does depend. I use fairly thin rounds on a bass with a bridge that probably isn't very nice to the strings, plus I like to have a nice tight bright sound, and I play pretty aggressively and often, so I have to change my strings every half year or so, because that's how long it takes them to break. If you use flats, and don't play too hard or often, then they can last forever. If you play a lot, you'll need to change them a lot, whether for sound or breaking strings. Personally I've never had a problem with dead strings, because they break before they get dead. :P
