Question Choosing Strings for a J Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got my beautiful Fender American Standard J bass at Christmas, and have kept the strings it came with on. I thought they sounded pretty nice so I kept them on. I'm assuming those are Fender Strings.

On my Ibanez bass I use GHS Bass Boomers. Now, I'm not so good with gear, which is why I'm asking, but what would you guys recommend to put on the Fender?

If there are any questions please ask. Thanks guys!

Hi there- I just purchased a new '08 MIA J also. First thing I did was dump the stock strings for DR High-Beams...sound is amazing and they are easy on the fingers and your frets. They sound beautifully bright, which can always be modified somewhat with amp controls in case they are too bright. Best strings ever.

The stock Fender strings are most likely Super Bass 8250Ms. They string thru body and have a taper on the E.

IME, Fender strings sound nice on a Fender bass (and other basses as well). Are you looking for something brighter, darker, warmer, looser, tighter? The Fenders are good middle of the road nickel round wound.

I tried Chromes flats last night on my Jazz. Tough call... The originals were pretty darn good to my ear!

More experimenting is required. I think I subscribe to the principle of the Jazz being as "tangy" as possible...

The stock Fenders are great, IMO. D'addario nickel XL's are my choice of roundwound for my Jazz though. Plenty of tang to be had with those.
