I ordered a set of chromes. Anyone else using flats on the MIA Deluxe P-bass? My only reservation is that with that 18v preamp I'll be losing some the the EQ possibility with the flats.
Thanks everyone. |
I have exactly the same bass (great machine IMO) and have been experimenting with Chromes on it. It sounds good, but I found that I prefer the sound with rounds. I've been using it with Fender 7250ML (the old ones with black silk) and D'Addario EXL 170.
Even with the P-pickup soloed, it doesn't sound exactly like other precisions. The special is a bit brighter, punchier, with more attack, but with less thump. You won't be losing the EQ possibility with flats, but it wouldn't sound like a classical precision with flats. I also found that, when you mix in the humbucker with rounds you get a nice growl, which is lost with Chromes. All in all, I found that the sound with Chromes is a bit dry, and I like the sound of my other Precision, a Squier CV, better with chromes. Not that the special sounds bad, just not the typical sound I am used to.
That said, the Am Dlx Special is a very versatile sonically and you'll be able to EQ to your preference.
Finally, just a quick question: How much of a play time do you get from your bass on a set of batteries? From mine, I get about 60 hours on a set of Duracell alkalines before I have to change them, which is on a power hungry site for a 18 V preamp.
