Church players - Question

Sign in to disble this ad
I have joined the local church gospel group and i was on my first rehearsal today. I have a P with GHS flats 45-105 and i feelt that the sound was week and embarrassing. I wonder what strings do you gospel players use? I'm torn between what sort of strings, gauge and brand i should use.

Thanks in advance!

I use GHS Brite Flats (Ground Round) on my P-bass. The sound guy at church raves about it.

Probably nothing wrong with your strings. What sort of amp setup did you use? Are you plugged into the PA?

I use Rotosound RS 665LD roundwounds or sometimes the DR Marcus Miller signature strings on my Peavey Cirrus 5-string

DR - The Righteous Choice

I use Fat Beams on my F, Black Beauties on my Corvette Pro and Skjold nickel-plated steel rounds on my pagan fretless Skjold. In its defense, my Skjold also sounds great with nickel Sunbeams.

To answer your question I use Curt Mangan Nickel Plated Steel strings for all my basses. Just enough brightness, lots of mids and plenty of bottom for my tastes (I play mostly at church).

With the exception of one bass where I tried out the DR Black Beauties which I really liked. I sold that bass to a TB'er here (my modded OLP MM3).

when you mention gospel, what kind of gospel are we talking about (artist wise)?

That can make or break it. If you're talking about what's known as 'Black' Gospel then those flats won't get the job done 99% of the time. Get yourself either some DR fatbeams or Deanmarkley Blue Steels, dial your mids back JUST a touch, boost your bass a little bit, and boost your trebble and much as you fell works for you..lol

D'Addario Chromes on my GSR200 for contemporary praise and worship (Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, Newsboys, etc...). It sounds pretty good IMHO. It all depends on what techniques you use and EQ, as previously mentioned.

I use a Fender P with Fender Flats in our Praise Band.
Lots of gospel players also play 5's. I've noticed some churches (especially old timers with high ceilings and choir lofts) are a lot different room to cover than most gigs.
Most gospel music I hear has a lot of slap & pop in it; which I can't do!

I used the house bass amp, an old Peavey head and cab which sounded ok. The church is not big, like 2-300 seats and about 100 people most sundays. We play a mix of swedish praise music and american modern gospel like Kirk Franklin and Fred Hammond.

About my flats, when i play outside the church i also feel that these are not my cup of tea so i need a new set of strings. Especially now when i need that slap sound. This summer i'm letting a bass builder do some modification to my bass body like adding double j pups instead of a p pickup. Oh and i nice maple top too! Gonna look sweeet!

DR Nickel Lo-Riders on my P, and GHS Bass Boomers on my 5 string, Direct into the PA through a Zoom B2.1u.

We play mostly modern P&W like Redman, Tomlin, Hillsong, etc..
