Yeah I get what you're saying. Like playing open e and them comparing it to a g at the twelfth fret on g string. Big difference. well one day then! maybe not as dramatic though..

Ok, multiple replies so here goes:

ixlramp: thanks for admiring, yeah, the taper is perfect. Actually I had to push the B and E saddles forward - now they more closely match the others which I didn't have to touch at all. I'll measure the exact scale length now that you've got me curious (yes I know it's 34" scale but I gotta know exactly!)

FunkMetalBass: +1 on the EQ advice, so with regards to my pm Neebs that bass EQ pedal with some cut to the lows and maybe a small boost to the low mids (~120 hz) and you'll boost the 'body' of your bass' tone and put more feeling into your sound. Boosting highs around 5KHz will add to your top end without adding hiss.

Funk, what 8 string do you have? My friend has a Galveston he wants to trade me for a sixer, I just have to obtain one when I have the funds. It looks like something fun to noodle on; if I get it I want to mod it for some properly sized strings.

Neebs, with regards to EQ'ing, I have a PDF called the EQ Primer I can send you via email if you pm me with your address. It helps a lot. Basically, it is better to cut more and boost less; if you don't already help with sound at your church you may as all the bass players I know do sound work also. It's a good, informative intro to how to set sound and how eq'ing works.

Whew, out of breath. Think I'm going to thump on the new strings for a while to relax tonight...

Raz

Actually, I had just e-mailed Skip about something else and wanted to wait for his reply before asking about the taper.

I play a custom 8-string built by JC. Here's the progress blog with pictures.

I've always thought about picking up a Galveston too, but I never have. The few youtube videos I've seen of them make them sound decent enough. I'll probably just get another custom if I ever decide to venture back into the 8+ world.

Sweet looking bass! Regarding the Galveston, read the Harmony Central reviews - they are spot on. It is a surprisingly well-built bass, solid, and does sound pretty darn good. The preamp on his is a bit noisy, but that could probably be fixed (shielding or a ground issue maybe).

A good candidate for Circle K's, or one can mix and match a set of Rotosounds for this thing for about $50-$60 off Amazon.com. The only issue is getting a string larger than a .145 attached to it as it is strung thru-body. Not sure how I'll do that yet, but it's begging for a much thicker F#.

That's a tough one. I can't tell from the picture, but if the ferrules are designed appropriately, you might be able to take a Dremel to them and make them top-loading like a Ritter. Otherwise, you might be confined to B-Bb tuning.

Just placed an order with CKS. I bought:

.142 Balanced 6-string set for my 35" fretless
.222 Balanced 4-string set for my 34" P-bass (tuned an octave below EADG)
.031 single for my Schecter 6-string
.019 single for my 35" custom 8-string (I've found the .021 to be a little heavy)

Well, I think I'm a convert now, very pleased with the strings. I get a more punchier tone, plenty of sustain, sufficient highs and mids (gotta boost them slightly), and a great feel - tighter overall but even across all the strings. I'm glad I went with the heavier set than what I originally was thinking. Although I would prefer slightly less tension, the heavier strings are probably more suited to my technique and sound.

Our practice tonight was in a different area so I couldn't play through our big rig but that time will come soon, can't wait...

I sent in a couple emails to Circle K strings, to both the customer service and tech lines, and heard nothing back on my order. Are they on Holidays??...maybe?

Do you have weird attachments for your email signature, our maybe some strange html in your email? Spam filters occasionally get hung up on those things. I'm not saying that's the reason, but it's always a possibility.

I haven't heard anything about vacations and whatnot. I placed an order this weekend so if I get strings before you get a response, you might need to contact them again.

As I said, I received my strings in two days last week; string orders are probably the priority, not emails. I'm sure they will get back to you asap as they must get a lot.

You ordered a .158 for low B? What scale length are you using?

34" for my NS-5.

Skip recommended this "double drop" setup for me in fall 2010 when I told him I needed a set for ACGCF tuning or GCGCF tuning. I haven't strayed since.

Oh, I thought you were tuning it to B. That seemed a bit excessive, even for my high-tension tastes.

I too double-drop (ADADGC) using the .124 dropped 5-string set and a .166 for my low A needs.

To be honest, I have tuned to low G, maybe once and I wasn't a huge fan, so it usually stays in A.
However, I'm fairly comfortable w/ the .158 at this point so I haven't seen a need to change. But after my new bass comes in Brownie is going in for some major work so I could maybe try a .150 with the .124 set and see how that turns out. I have big hands and a heavy fretting technique so hasn't been an issue, thankfully!

Low G on a .158? I'm not surprised. You should get a .182 or .190 and give it a shot. It's wonderful.

If I ever join a band that plays in drop C, I'm definitely going to have to get myself a nice, heavy low G string.
