Circle K's drop tuned

Sign in to disble this ad
Im thinking about ordering myself a set of circle k's drop tuned strings but have got myself in a bit of a muddle reading through existing posts on here to find the info im looking for

I play a 4 string Dean Edge (34 scale) and tune to CGCF for the majority of my bands songs with a couple of songs in DGCF

My playing style is quite a heavy handed finger style. I would like to try a higher tension set.
Ive looked on Circle K's tension charts and referenced with the posts ive been reading through on here and so far i "THINK" ive narrowed it down but would like to ask the forums advice incase im missing something as im a bit of a noob to the forums and also string tensions.

c/d-.118
g - .079
c - .059
f - .043

the main points im concerned with is that im not sure if i have the tension correct or will these be fairly loose and thus go for the .124 .082 .061 .045 set

also would the .118/.124 (depending on which set i go with) be able to tune upto the D ok or will it be to tight.

Hoping someone can help me here and that im not wasting your time by missing something that is staring me straight in the eyes

You need to look up Knuckle_head user here, he owns Circle K and will help you with this info regardless of whether you ultimately buy his strings or not, great guy!!!

You are in the same tuning I'm in, (minus a few strings) and i got some circle k strings! The set you are looking at will probably be a bit floppy, especially if you want a higher tension set. I too went for a higher tension using their tension chart, I purchased:

C - .130
G - .086
C - .063
F - .047

And I like the tension very much.
I've tuned the low C to D a few times, no problem, just nice and tight. If you plan to tune up to D frequently maybe you should go for the .124, but I wouldnt even think about using a .118 for a C, It's one note up from B remember! But thats just me.

With their chart thing, I've found that 35lbs for a string is a bit floppy, but most people would call this average, 40lbs is a nice tension, and 45-50lbs is niiiiice and tight.

I've also got a .182 I tune to G# sometimes; they say its 49lbs but I still think its a bit floppy.

But each to his own. Best of luck

BTW Circle K strings have an awesome tone, I just recorded a few songs with my set and people have complimented my tone.

OP, you sound like me with respect to plucking hand strength and tension preference. I recommend 45-50 lbs of tension. These strings are flexible enough to still feel comfortable on the fretting hand while remaining tight and focused.

Both the Drop Tuned .136 and .142 are excellent choices (sitting around 44 and 48 lbs, respectively). However, if you plan to tune the lowest strings up to D (10 lbs more than the C), you'll want to build a custom set and buy a gauge in between.

I'd probably go with this set:
.130 (40.37 lbs at C, 50.88 lbs at D)
.090 (44.37 lbs at G)
.067 (44.58 lbs at C)
.049 (43.37 lbs at F)

Yes good advice

Choose a drop tune set and then adjust the lowest gauge to the next lightest gauge, just as FunkMetalBass has with his good gauge suggestion. Order from the singles page at Circle K.
