CLANK!

i'm trying to get some sort of clanky thing going. i have a naturally hard attack but the clank seems to be really harsh. i currently use rotosound swing 66 roundwounds. is there any point in trying a string that naturally has more bottom end to it so the sound isn't so harsh? or will it just be a waste of money

As far as roundwound strings go, DRs might as well be the only ones in the world as far as I'm concerned.

EDIT: Have you tried different gauges? Heavier gauge strings tend to have a little more stiffness, and therefore they give off a little more boom. Also, check your pickup height. High pickups can sometimes reproduce a lot of string/fret noise.

For a Roto-ish rounds tone with less clank I also recommend Lo-Riders, or maybe the Roto nickels if yours are SS.

It's not the strings causing the clank, the clank is the sound of the strings bouncing off the frets which is common if you use light gauge strings and have a heavy attack , hence the problem has lessened since you switched to the heavier gauge.

This just shows how we use the same terms but often mean different things. The clank I'm referring to is the metallic top that seems to ride above the lows and low mids these strings pump out-it can be easily EQed out but gives a lot of interesting edge to a mix when allowed to come through.
