Clashing silk?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just changed the strings on my FireGlo Ric from D'Addario chromes to Fender 9050Ls. These strings came highly recommended on the Rickenbacker forum. Anyway I have never given a second thought to the color of the silks because all of my basses have had unpainted headstocks before. The 9050Ls have bright green silks and they look ridiculous with the red in the headstock, but I guess it's appropriate for the season.

Has anyone here ever NOT bought a set of strings because of the color of the silks? Even though I think the Fenders are ugly on my bass I'll probably buy them again, since I really like the way they sound and feel.

Half of my basses have rotosound RS 66 nickel with blue silk, a few have d addario chromes which is blue to and the rest has the rotosound rb45, which is basically the same strings as the nickel ones but without any silk!
I started using the silkless strings on my candy red jazz bass because the blue and red together looked wrong!
In the end i put the blue silked strings on all my basses unless its a bass i play a lot with a pick cause it messes up the silk at the bridge and that looks messy or if the color of the body is going to look crap with the color of the silk!

I dont use any other strings but i would not use a silked string that looked crap on a bass! And i would definitely not use green silk on a red bass!

Do you color the silks with a sharpie? I don't the I'm bothered enough by the color to go that far.

I hate silk on my strings, luckily my favorite brands don't have any.

Green is the traditional Fender silk color. thats why its that color, look at the old 70s, possibly 60s flats and they are the same color.

My bass is green and has blue silks on the strings. But the headstock is black, so I suppose it doesn't make a massive stand out difference. They sound good anyways, so I couldn't care.

Take the first jackwagon to Namby-Pamby land, maybe they'll have more color choices there.

how are you liking the fenders so far?? I've been thinking of tryin chromes or fenders on my ric for a while now but,I'm arfaid of loosing that(signature) ric snarl and bite..I know chromes are bright for a flat,so right now,I'm leaning in that direction but,I'd like to hear about the fenders(supposed to be the same string only cheaper)..BTW..I think green silks would look good against my jet-glo headstock...
