Cleaning new TI Jazz Flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got my new JF344s in the mail from stringsandbeyond (best price due to free shipping) and am excited to try them out, but had a ? first...

I had read they come out of the package with "sticky" quality that people guessed might be a manunfacturing residue(?) Mine do have a little drag when I run them through my fingers (esp. E string) that I can't say is like a residue, but maybe just the ridges in the winding. I thought I might try the cleaning before installing them anyway...?

Any advice on cleaning vs. not cleaning, or what cleaning agent to use if any? Thanx

I have never found it necessary to clean my jazz flats. Once they get a little finger oil on them, they're like butter. Your mileage may vary and all that

Step away from the strings! and DO NOT clean them! just play the crap out of em, cause they sound better and better the more you do.

I agree with the above replies. Mine were a little sticky at first, but with constant playing this went away within a couple of days.

You don't need to clean them. Put them on your bass and play them. They get better the more you play them. I just finished practicing on my old Fender P with 8 year old Thomastic JF 344s. They still sound wonderful. Smooth as silk.

Nobody cleans flats ... I heard stories about players soaking them in vasoline or some other substance to deaden them ...
