Cliff + Flatwounds = Kill 'Em All

Sign in to disble this ad
After the release of the new guitar hero game, tons of Metallica bass tracks became available. This guy posts lots of them, including some from Kill 'Em All! Take a quick listen and it becomes clear that Cliff recorded Kill 'Em All with flats! Who knew?

I think you're right. You can hear some of the finger squeak noise also, that is pretty unique and indicative of flatwounds. I'm a Cliff fan, but not so much that I've researched what he used and when.... I'm assuming he recorded Kill 'em All with a Rickenbacker? Rick+flats is a killer combo!

yeah the first album has a distinctive tone compared to the others,...

I think he mainly used the aria's after kill em all?

I liked the work on kill em all, on some songs its the defining work of the drums and bass with the guitars alot more laid back,... very different to and just for all style!!!

Definitely sounds like a rick with flats. Not a big fan of metallica but it's pretty cool.

It wouldn't have matter what Jason played on justice, They would have just mixied it out too. I would love for someone to remix that album, and release it.

Honestly, after hearing some of Jason's Justice basslines, I'm not so sure that he didn't overplay a bit. Still, that coulda been dealt with, and there coulda been some ACTUAL bass tracks audible on the album.

I was just listening to Garage Days. Now there's some great Newstead bass playing and tones. Amazing what a nice mix will do! His tone almost sounds scooped, but it's so thick and just sits back there even with the guitar.

I don't know how much difference that would've made on the cd. They had the bass mixed way out since they were still in the hazing process. Live tho i do agree. As for Cliff using flats, who woulda thunked it?

Edit: already beaten to it

You still get squeak with Flats just not as much as with rounds , also obviously eq may contribute to this as well

Yeah, it's (to my ears) exactly the same squeak I get when I play flatwounds.

Exact opposite to my ears...He was allowed to open up a lot more live.

Cliff was in the wrong band. I think the bus fell on the wrong dude. Proof God is fallible.
