The GC salesman coaxed me out of $50+ for a 5-string set of Cleartones a few weeks ago. The conversation centered around the DR Fat Beams (love the tone hate the short life), and I was kinda looking for a longer lasting alternative. So far just played one rehearsal with'em, the real test will be next Saturday on a gig where I have to push the amp some. We'll see if there's a favorable comparison..

Black Beauties!
Without a doubt!
Very very piano tone. I use a mild bit of distortion at times and they are 100% punchy in the low end! I used cleartones a few times but didn't like them because the coating would get slimy feeling after sweating for two hours on stage.

dhomer,

How are those Cleartone strings working for you? I still like 'em. Mine seem to be holding up really well.

Played a few gigs with the Cleartones, and I'm not complaining. Good B and E string definition, good punch, tone not quite like the Fat Beams, but full enough. Unplugged they still have the twang. If they sound like this 8 months from now I feel it was worth the investment..

Elixirs absolutelt kill black beauties as far as life goes. I know this very well as I have the dreaded "acid hands". The beauties lasted about 4 days, just a tad longer than uncoated strings for me and the elixers are still sounding great 3 months later, and for me that is rediculous, so the price is dirt cheap compared to how much I used to fork out. Also, it seems that the DR's are coated in a hard substance while elixirs actually have a thin "nanoweb" coating over them.

As far as I know, DRs have only the wrap wire coated, while Elixirs are coated _after_ the wire is wrapped, protecting the spaces in between the wraps from dirt. Never tried DRs though, can anyone confirm that?

What about other coated strings, like Rotosound Nexus, Cleartones, Aurora, Warwick EMP, D'Addario, GHS Infinity - are they completely coated like Elixirs?

Right you are, that's exactly why the elixirs last so long but do sometimes get slimey or sticky. I've tried the D'Addarios and they use the same coating as DR, can't help you on the others and I've not even heard of most of those lol.
