Coated flatwound recommendations?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about either converting one of my basses or just buying a third as a fretless. From everything I've read about this type of neck I can extend the life of the neck significantly with flatwounds and I have learned that I like the sound and feel of flatwounds.
It would also help if the strings are coated.
Anyone recommend a particular string?

Why coat a flat-wound string. Just get stainles steels and wipe down after use.

The coating isn't to protect the string in this particular case. It's to make the surface as smooth as possible and protect the neck from the strings.
Wiping down is a habit I need to get in to.

use tape wounds then. You sound like you're a bit a paranoid about your board getting messed up...

Too funny. I couldn't make the site search engine narrow down to find what I wanted without wading through a ton of posts but when I went to google to search for tapewounds it brought me back here to a thread with a poll and discussion on "Tapewound vs.Flatwound (for fretless electric)". I guess I have my answer.
Try tapewounds and see what I think of the sound.
Of course I need to get the fretless into my collection first...

That's like choosing to only drive on dirt roads to protect your car tires (feel free to insert a silly car analogy of your own, if you prefer).

Play what you like the sound of- if it's flats on a fretless you've nothing to worry about anyway, fretwear will be minimal.

Just remember TAPEWOUNDS are very dull/thuddy sounding. VERY hard to get ANY trebley-ness outta 'em.

I like 'em & have some on my Precision,
but unlike regular flats- which I can do a little slap on if needed- tapes sound downright 'upright like' & slappin these sounds like..... well, just not 'right' IMO.

IMO/IME If U like the regular ROUNDWOUND sound, but wanna protect ya board.....

I'd be going for a set of HALF ROUNDS. ALMOST as smooth as flats, but with a 'splank' to 'em like a roundwound.
:-)

I like the sound of flatwounds. Under the belief that any pawnshop purchase would improve with new strings, I put them on my Dean.

Yup. I use these on FRETTED basses for their cut. Plus they sound great slapped.

It's good that you like them. For me, half rounds are like the worst of both worlds. They sound and feel like dead rounds.

I love LaBella black nylon tapewounds. They aren't sparkly but they do have high end to them. I guess it all depends on what kind of music you want to do, what kind of sound you are trying to get, etc.
