Coated Fretless Strings - Anyone Using Them?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search and did not find the answer I was seeking.

Is anyone using coated fretless strings aka coated strings designed for a fretless? What brand? How do you like them" Pros vs Cons? How would you describe the tone of the strings?

I just got a fretless 5 and I'm leaning towards Roto tape wounds, but I am investigating / searching for all the options for a coated string.

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Mac

Well, I've never seen strings that had frets...

OK, snark switch now turned off. I did use coated strings once, but it seemed to interfere with my hands grounding the bass. There was a thread about this, a while back.

Just to clarify- although coated strings might work better(for some)on a fretless, I don't believe they're actually intended solely for fretless. That said, I liked DR Black Beauties on my fretles Rebop 5- very bright & full but maybe a bit gentler on the fingerboard(than non-coated roundwounds).

That's ok, I'm trying to figure out why he didn't post this thread in the Strings forum.

+1 on the DR Black Beauties. I have them on one fretless and tapewounds on another.

I've used the DR Black Beauties on my fretless Modulus Genesis for years now. They sound really nice and last a very long time. They aren't too bad on my fretboard either. I use them on my Status with Phenolic fb too and they sound super warm.

I use black flatwound RotoSound Tru Bass 88s on my black fretless. It looks very sleek and clean, and I like it. It sounds great too, and the strings feel really nice under the finger.

Thanks for (most of ) the comments guys; kind of an angry Monday. I actually originally posted in basses because that is where my search for string information ended and I simply entered a new thread. It was just a mistake - sorry for the stress.

Anyway, I use DR Black Beauties on two of my instruments and love them. I use DR HighBeams on all my other basses. Being new to the fretless, I was most concerned - paranoid actually - about strings chewing the fretboard. I'm curious about the Rotosound 88's and I really like the Black beauties and want the mwah that I know they can deliver. I'll give 'em both a try.

Thanks again guys.

Mac
