I am new to this app, so this is obviously my1st thread. Just put on my 1st set of coated strings on my 5 string fender jazz, after 12 years on the bass. I did some reaserch and decided to go with the black beauties by DR. I know strings r a very personal choice for bassists, but I wanted to put a good word out there for these things. I don't play death metal. I play new rock and 90s style alternitive. The thin strings r very playable! And the new coating dosnt seem to hinder my funkesk personal style. These strings r bright and vibrant right outa the box. I have always feared fosters because I like bright high ends. But Dr has obviously captured this with there new black beauties if anyone has anything else on the topic of coated strings, or black beauties specifically that would b awesome...

Ziggy | I beg to differ. I am a huge DR string fan - But, i will pass on the Black Beauties. They will go dead quick and feel very plastic like. I just didnt like them and I play early reggae so a dead flat sounding string is acceptable. But, I still like to have the ability to bump the treble back up and get some brightness when I want to get funky. I suggest you try a set of Aurora coated strings (black) - I prefer these to the Black Beauties. last much longer and feel more like a traditional string vs a plastic string feel of the DRs. i think the Auroras will give you more of the grind and growl you want for metal. The DRs are going to get thumpy on you. my 2 cents - cheers!

Very bright and snappy which lasts quite a long time, and the softer feel of the round core is nice. I remember them being quite a bit brighter than Sunbeams, I need to give these a try on my new Lakland! I love the feel of the coating, nice and slick! Not as slick as Elixir, but Black Beauties sound better and brighter.

| | | | Obviously I can't speak to the logjevity of the strings, iv only put about ten hours or so on them however in my research iv herd more good things about that and bad things about coated strings sounds. I can tell u the sound to this point is similar or better then the high beems. If they go dead early, I will definetly try something else and thank u for your opinions on other things to try, but for now I am quite happy. As for the metal questions my segestion would b to try a heavyier gaged coated string... Any other comments/sugestions/thought???

They felt pretty good, but noticed right off the bat they they are a little darker than most strings I've used. Not as flat sounding as GHS Bright Flats, but headed in that direction. Then the A went dead after about three weeks without any strenuous playing. I may have done something wrong since there were very detailed instructions for stringing the BBs, INSIDE the package, which I didn't see until I already strung my bass.
I probably won't try them again. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
