Coated, Taped Strings

What are these and why would you want to use them?
Seems like in the 80's (before I quit playing) I tried a set of strings that had a plastic coating on them and they sounded like a tight rubber band or something you would find on a kids guitar. These must be different?

I just bought a set of Fender nylons off here at a very good price just to see what they were like. They are now off my bass. I was shocked at how springy they sounded, almost like rounds. Their added thickness and higher action required made me dislike them very much.

I really dig the set of La Bella tapewound strings I have on my fretless.

I like them for some applications. They are very clean sounding. Kinda uprightish sounding. Slap tone is pretty atrocious. They do have a bit of a rubber band feel, but they do baby your fingers. They also last forever and a day.

Tape wound on a Hof

They sound great on my Hof almost akin to a standup.
