I purchased a bass yesterday and it had some black strings that appeared to have a coating on them. Are these flats or rounds? They felt different, kind of like the way they felt, no string noise from my sloppy playing, they didn't sound bad to me either although I do like the Hi Beams sound better I think, haven't tried both on this bass

You can tell if they are round or flat by looking at them. Ridges will mean round, smooth/no ridges means flat. If they are rounds, my bet is that they are DR Black Beauties. They are a coated version of the Hi Beams where the wrap wire is coated before being wound. VERY good strings IMO. Not quite as "zingy" out of the box as Hi Beams but more comfortable to my hands and more consistent over time again IMO. Who knows how old they may be on a bass you just bought though. I always throw a fresh set of strings on every bass I buy. DR makes many colors of the coated strings, if you do want to check them out.

They could be nylon tape wounds, but unless they sound like an upright bass, then it's most likely the Black Beauties.

The ends that wrap around the tuners were purple. They did look like a round wound with a coating...thanks

Not DR Black Beauties then. They don't have silks.

I'm guessing La Bella Tape Wound strings then. IIRC they have the purple silk and the black nylon tape.
