Comin' Round Again...

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, after about a month-long flirtation with flats I'm back to tried-and-true Rotosound 66 Nickel rounds.

The flats sounded great in their own way, but I realized that what I liked about the Chrome flats was a lessening of unpleasant finger noise... but the accompanying lack of bite was giving me the blues. And while I can EQ out finger noise to a degree, I can't EQ in a sound quality that isn't there.

I may try them again (this is my second try at flats in about 35 years) but for now I'm glad to be round again.

Welcome back to the round world, the best one there is. lol. Perhaps you just need to spend some time working on less fnger dragging on strings when changing notes. And remember you dont have to use the same finger to sound the next fret or two down, you can use a diff finger for the new note. So unless the music calls for that slide sound, which in synth terms is portemento I think, for how long it takes to go from one note to another. You can skip the stuff that makes finger noise and just do the notes. Which is fastest portemento, or however its spelled. Lol. Or is this a diff type of finger noise then caused from dragging finger on string?

I think what I'm talking about really is the more irritating aspects of the treble zone that rounds tend to exhibit more than flats.

My playing technique tends toward an aggressive right hand w/pick (and I'm happy with my technique). If I dip just a bit of EQ somewhere between 2k - 5k it kills the 'blatt' while keeping the bite. This dip is not as necessary with the flats, which I at first interpreted as an improvement rather than a totally different sound nature, one that is too much of a departure from what I really like to sound like.

This came into clearer view when recording.
