Conklin GT5 - B string won't fit bridge - Pls Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone.

I have a Conklin GT5 and I finally decided to change the strings for the first time after having the bass for 7 yrs. I've encountered a problem with the bridge's cut out slot for the B string. The original B string that comes with the bass was a headache to remove, but at least it could somewhat fit (force needed) into the cut out slots. But when I tried to fit a new B string through, there seem to be a disrepency in the size of the string (at ball end) and my bridge's cut out slot: the slot was too narrow to accomodatre the string! I've no experience changing the B string, since I've only previously owned a 4-string.

So the questions are:

-Is this a common occurance?

-Also, does it mean I'm forced to use lighter gauge strings? My new B string is a .125, I don't think a B string would be below that.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Just curious; do you mean on the string or on the bridge?

The bridge, most probably.

Thanks, I may look into some taperwound strings. Those are the one's with the E's and B's ball-end being as narrow as the rest of the string, right?

I haven't file down on my bridge yet. Now hopefully I won't have to.
