Core wires used in strings.

Do string mfgs. use the same composition core wires? Forget size and shape differences(round, octagonal) for the moment.
There is a company here in Tennessee not far from where I live and I thought they made the music wire or piano wire from which string cores are manufactured however, I now think they make the entire string, wrap and all.
I was a bit suprised. I thought alot of these companies like DR amongst others had their own winding factory like Dunlop. In fact one company they make strings for I always heard owned there own winding factory and wire mill to draw out the wire from the raw steel!
Marketing is obviously effective.
