Is there any real reason why flats are almost double the price of their round wound counter parts? Just went up the store to buy some D'addario Chromes for my p bass, and I haven't bought flats in about 3 years, only to find out they were 46 bucks a pack, compared to the D'addario XL nickels I usually buy which are about 25 bucks. Is there more material,or just lower S&D?

Sucks, I guess I will have to start buying them online,I think the longer I play the more I get tired of the insanely bright tone of rounds, more so on my p bass, but I hate the sound of dead round wounds too.

I've noticed the same thing, in that flatwounds usually cost more than roundwounds. I tend to get my strings online which you can almost always get a set of flatwounds (at least for 4 bangers) for way cheaper than $46.... I usually get from Juststrings.com and if I remember right their Chromes usually run about $28.

And flats last for a long long long time if you allow them to. So the investment is a moot point based on years of service vs weeks or months of use on roundwounds. |

Supply & demand.
But, flats will last much longer than roundwounds.
So, figure that into cost.
I've had a set of TI flats on my P-bass for three years.
And the still sound great. |

Shop online my friend. But yes, flats are more expensive. They last longer, so the company wants to make profit where they can.

Closest big place is a GC in tallahassee which is like 2 and half hours away from here.
