Cost of Flatwounds

Sign in to disble this ad
Is there any real reason why flats are almost double the price of their round wound counter parts? Just went up the store to buy some D'addario Chromes for my p bass, and I haven't bought flats in about 3 years, only to find out they were 46 bucks a pack, compared to the D'addario XL nickels I usually buy which are about 25 bucks. Is there more material,or just lower S&D?

Yea I guess so, I don't like waiting a week for strings though. Maybe it's just the shop here.

I think it's a few things- more costly to make, bigger mark-up my the manufacturers to make up for the fact they won't be often replaced, and bigger mark-up by retailers because they are more or less a specialty item and hang around on the shelves longer.

Yea I figured it was probably one of the two or both. Sucks, I guess I will have to start buying them online,I think the longer I play the more I get tired of the insanely bright tone of rounds, more so on my p bass, but I hate the sound of dead round wounds too.

What's funny is that I thought about posting this same exact question yesterday but for some reason didn't. I've noticed the same thing, in that flatwounds usually cost more than roundwounds. I tend to get my strings online which you can almost always get a set of flatwounds (at least for 4 bangers) for way cheaper than $46.... I usually get from Juststrings.com and if I remember right their Chromes usually run about $28.

Yea I was looking at MF and they got em for 29.99. Like I said I just hate waiting so long just to get a set of strings. I guess thats the price of convenience

I paid about $45 or a set of DR Flats, and that was with a coupon.

And flats last for a long long long time if you allow them to. So the investment is a moot point based on years of service vs weeks or months of use on roundwounds.

Supply & demand.

But, flats will last much longer than roundwounds.
So, figure that into cost.
I've had a set of TI flats on my P-bass for three years.
And the still sound great.

This. Another benefit of flats is that you can take them off and leave them off for a while when you try different strings. If you find that you liked the previous strings better, just put them back on. No worries about them going dead or anything!

Well I definitely never considered the life of the strings. Either way I didn't have the money to dish out double for strings this time around. Maybe in a couple weeks I'll grab some online.

Best thing they ever did for string sales was convince players to use a roundwound "piano tone" that fades relatively quickly requiring frequent string replacement.

Wow. That shop is robbing you! On Musician's Friend, D'Addario Chromes 4-String set is $30! Their rounds are ~$20! Shop online my friend. But yes, flats are more expensive. They last longer, so the company wants to make profit where they can.

Yea that shop is crap, this is a place that sells more offbrand and 6 string bass strings than 4 string sets. but it's all I got around here. Closest big place is a GC in tallahassee which is like 2 and half hours away from here.
