Couple string questions.

My needs/tastes have changed a bit.

? #1) I want a mellow, classic sounding (think Noel Redding), low tension flatwound.

? #2) I might be getting a 5er but I want to tune it E-C. I like my E in the 100-105 (110?) range. But I want a lot of selection. Thats my problem.

Thanks guys and gals

I have no advice on the 5-er, but I really love the chocolate-y deep tones of the ROTO 77s I put on my P Affinity.

They get 100% of that Motown and jazz sounds too. They are very easy on the fingers and there's NO string noise or clanking from them.

Another set I am extremely happy with are the Elixir Nanos - the ones that have the fur!

I put them on my Deluxe J Active and they are so good that I feel they actually play themselves. However, they were very bad on my P-clone! Go figger!

The same type of Elixirs also came on my Ibanez SR/SG500, Active and they will be the next and the next same string over and over. They are sheer joy to play.

I think TI flats make a high C, they are low tension too, unlike the Rotos .

If you are tuning E-C what's the problem? Just use the string set you are using now and order C as a single.

I had my Carvin AC50 tuned E-C for a while. Let me tell you, it was a GIGANTIC hassle! I just used the strings from the normal nylon wrapped 5 string set for the bass and ordered separate nylon wrapped C strings from various manufacturers. NONE were really right. Eventually I had to end up using a G string from a light gauge Fender set. Of course none of this applies to your situation, but I'm just saying that trying to match a separate C to the existing set can run into a big hassle especially if you have to keep ordering strings till you find the one that's it.

Of course once you find the one that works just order a bunch and you are home free.
