Has anyone ever tried the d addario expr170 reds? I'm interested in any reviews anyone may have. I know the copper acoustic guitar strings sound really good but these really caught my eye.

Consider me interested. Mostly because copper mining is a big part of local history, and I'm guessing they look pretty cool.

Certainly someone has tried them and has an opinion. |

Very smooth feeling, and I'd say they're a bit brighter than nickel D'addario's, not even close to the zing of steels though. They have a nice thump underlying the similar tone of a nickel string, as well as a sort of airy quality in the high end. They seem to slap pretty well, and they look badass.

I sold a couple of sets, and strung up one of the store's Precisions with them. They sounded good, a very bright piano sound, but they went dead even faster than Rotosound RS-66!

Not sure what comes out of those fingers, but they corrode anything. The reds have a nice bright zing to them with a piano sustain. Brighter than i like personally (i play flats mostly) but they arent overbearing. And they've lasted way longer than uncoated strings would have. They look cool too! |

They did go dead pretty quickly, and, after a while, it looked like the instrument was strung with old pennies. Loved the sound, but then again, I realyl was not that aware of all of the nuances of bass frequencies; I was a plug & play guy. Time and wisdom have gotten me more aware, and it is the former of those 2 that keeps me from picking up a set of these, now. Copper has gotten expensive, and I have graduated to J basses and Warwicks.

They sound very similar to nickel to my ears. But the A string was quite a bit duller than the others, almost dead sounding.
After 3 weeks, The E string has oxidized and is now much darker in the area where I play a lot. I thought these things were coated? Did I wear it off? Why not the other strings? Did one string miss the coating process? I dunno.
I'd rather have some plain old uncoated nickel XLs instead of these. Oh well. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
