DA XLs the cause for low E string output on my Bongo?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I've recently had a problem with my Musicman Bongo in that the E string just isn't loud enough!

It's not a massive problem when playing loudly (it's not a massive volume different), and I just have to remember to dig into the E string very slightly more. But still annoying!

I'm fairly sure the XL's are the cause of this; however, I've done some setup on it recently (and I'm not expert at setup), so I'm not sure if I've messed something else up or not.

I LOVE the sound of these strings (especially after they're worn in a bit), but the E string is driving me mad! I've tried raising the bass side of the pickups, but doing this any more will just make the A string over powering.

I'm using a 105 set and I'm down-tuning to D-standard if that helps.

Is it the XLs? If so, I have one packet left in my room (the double pack of XLs was only £22 or so ), and I think I'll try something else after that...

Does this happen when you're tuned to standard? That set seems kind of light for D standard, I use the 105 set for E.

May you need to raise the saddle on the A string or lower it on the E string. You may have a bum string.

The biggest drawback to the XLs for me was the E string. Maybe nature of the beast. Sadowsky Black Nickels had a great E string.

Sorry for the late response. I've been tuning my bass in standard recently to play some stuff, and I've noticed the problem isn't nearly as bad in standard tuning.

105s are a bit light for down-tuning, but I LOVE them in D-standard (really digging low tension right now) -- I'd probably go down to 100s if I was in standard tuning 100% :P (what a wimp I am)

By the sadle, do you mean the height of the string at the bridge? The string height isn't as even as it should be (since I suck)...

But yeah, it's a shame if the XLs are doing this. Maybe it's time to try a new brand once I've gone through the one packet I have left
