D'Addario Chromes on a Beatle Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Do any of you use D'Addario Chromes on Hofner basses or Hofner copies? When I go to my local music store tomorrow, I'm going to buy a set of D'Addario Chromes (40-100 gauge) and put them on my Rogue Viola Bass. Will the Chromes produce a nice classic rock tone (from the 1960s British Invasion)? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

it'll take them a month or two to settle down (less if you rub grease on them), but i've done it and it sounds great.

I assume the Rogue has a tailpiece. So you'll want Medium Length not Short Length.

Very very nice sound on my Epi Viola. I'd call it more 'upright-y' than 'classic rock-y', but my definition of Classic Rock is after the British Invasion (i.e. more a Rounds sound).

Yes I have a Jay Turser Hofner copy with Chromes, sounds great. They've been on it for a year and a half .

I have a set on Davison copy. I was able to get a super low setup with them.

doesn't matter what they used for strings, quite honestly. they all sound the same once they're dead.

The only flats that work well for me on a short scale bass are Pyramid Golds from Germany. They are completely different from other flats -- very flexible and smooth. I believe these were the strings used by McCartney in the 60's.

I just put a set of chrome flats on my Epi Viola and it sounds fantastic. 45-100 gauge.
I initially bought em for my P-Bass, but decided to try and find a set w/ a 105 E.

FWIW, I had some email correspondence w/ Gibson and the rep said that long scale strings would be fine to use in the Viola..........we'll see how it goes.

I have the Jay Turser Hofner also. How do you like it? Harmonics are nearly as acccurate as my Fender Basses, but not that bad. Great action though!
