Brand new Chromes are bright, almost like rounds, and can take a long time to mellow out. They also have a mid-range emphasis that I did not like at all on a P-bass, whose pickups already cover that territory. They sounded much better to me on a J in most cases, which can make up for the typical midrange scoop on a J when both pickups are at equal volume, but suffered from too much mid-range with the bridge pickup solo'd.
As far as tension, I use the lighter 45-100 gauge whose tension is OK. If the tension difference between D'Addario light and medium gauge rounds is any indication, I'd probably find the the 50-105's to be a little stiff. YMMV.
