Question D'Addario Chromes Flatwound Gauge .050-.105 on Fender Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Fender MIA Jazz and I'm thinking about getting D'Addario chromes.

Here's the set

I played these strings on an Ibanez soundgear and loved them. I also heard they are recommended for a Jazz.

Would these be what I need to should I try a different set? I play rock style, and I've been told these aren't rock sounding but I have plenty of effects and tried them out and they play just fine.

Any reccomended sets? I've just been rambling cause I completely forgot what I was originally going to say

Those are good flats, and they are among the best flats for rock, because they have good high mids. However, IMO, a Jazz bass with flats is really too mellow for a good rock tone. I'd stick with a good set of SS rounds like LoRiders for that. A Precision, on the other hand, sounds great with flats, even in a rock setting.

I have these strings on my Squier Classic Vibe Jazz, although mine are .045 - .100. I play classic rock and find they sit very well in the mix. Great string... very smooth with a warm tone.

Flats on my jazz actually sit better in the mix. There is less competition with the guitars because the flats seem to go a little lower.

I love the sound of GHS Pressurewounds on a Jazz. They are flattened out rounds (oval wrapping),

I never tried the Chromes, heard they are more zingy then other flats. May have to let them break in a bit and they may not be a thumpy or classic sounding compared to other strings.

Do a search, Jazz basses with flats. You will find a ton of clips on here that have bassists playing with flats on jazz basses.

I wouldn't use the term "zingy" for any flats

They definitely have more edge or brightness than most others. But I've heard others say TI's have more brightness than chromes do. I've not tried TI's, but I currently have Chromes on a P-bass that I use on and off as a general do-it-all bass. Blues, Country, Rock, Pop, etc. Depending on what I'm playing depends where the tone knob is.

Quick highjack, can anyone tell me if the TI Jazz Flats are lower tension than the Chromes?

I have DR LoRiders, and Nickel Sunbeams on my other basses and the Chromes are quite a bit higher tension. So much so that I find it's a surprising work out for the back of my fingers and hands, and the nut on my P-bass is cut very low.

IMHO higher tension = lighter touch and lower action without buzz.

I like lots of tension.

I use these strings on almost all my basses they are great and work on any bass that has some kind of pickup or resinating chamber.

I think the first few Led Zeppelin albums would beg to disagree...

I have them on my P copy and I like the sound. Good sustain too. You can hold a full note on 60bmp without fading.

I am deciding what to put on my PJ SX.....Chromes or TI Flats. I have pressurewound and don't like them too much.

I saw this thread and decided to add my 2 cents.
I have flats on a MIM Jazz 5 string and I really like it. I'm not so much a 5 string player but the band loves it. I think it's because of the flats sit so well in the mix for what we do.
Also, I put flats on my SX P-bass which again rocked a gig we played recently. Also have flats on my fretless, a requirement in my opinion.
I am seriously considering placing flats on my MIA Jazz 4 string. Great bass, built to last and has an Audere installed. Great sound and feel.
I have an Ibanez SR Prestige bass I would keeps rounds on just in case.
