Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I am a current user of Rotosounds Flatwound 45-105 guage strings. (Jazz Bass 77)

And I am thinking about trying some D'Addario Chromes which guage do you think would be best for me?? seen as I use those strings now?

Hmm... it all depends on what you like (and don't like) about the current gauge you're using.

I would personally go for a 45-105 or a 50-105 set, but that's because I like them stiff for my fairly aggressive style.

I've noticed that a lot of roundwound-loving bassists who are accustomed to the 45-105 gauge often opt for a 45-100 or lighter set when using flatwounds. I couldn't tell you why, though, other than that it may be because of the naturally thicker but smoother feel of flatwounds in comparison to similar-gauge roundwounds.

Thank you for your advice, il prob go for the 45-105 or a slightly lighter set, as they are quite hard to buy where I live and online they seem to be non existant. Im just trying them to see if they sound better or I like them better than the Rotos.

Just theorizing here, but could it be because they're trying to avoid having to make truss rod adjustments, etc?

For all Brits having trouble getting strings, go these:

www.stringbusters.com
www.stringsdirect.co.uk

Both of those have good range, but StringBusters didn't do the Half Rounds I wanna try (D'Addario), but Strings Direct did, at a reasonable price too. So check them both out - what one doesn't have the other might just do. They also offer discounts on bulk buying. Though buying in bulk on bass strings is something my pocket can't handle - disgustingly expensive practice indeed!

Hope this helps, chief. Good luck.

I have the ECB81 gauge set on my P bass. They work great. Not too much tension, but not floppy either. I recommend them.

UK guys - yu can get the string less expensively by using this guy - I got a set of Chromes (50-105), a set of 5 string DR Hi-Beams (45-130), and 3 sets of Elixir Polyweb acoustic light strings - all for £54 including Air Mail delivery!!

To grab those in Stringbusters would have cost me £89.50
On Strings Direct it would have cost me £88.37

Anyhow - here's the Ebay link for the guy's store - really great service and prices!!
