Sign in to disble this ad
i have a 2008 fender american precision bass. i wanted to buy a set of d'addario chromes in the "long scale" will it be enough to string through my p bass? or am i better off buying a super long scale? i believe the p bass is 34" scale?

I just put a set on a new jazz with a BAII, no problems.
Had to shave the blue wrap back about a 1/2" on the G.
Super long would give you too many wraps on the post, IMO.

I just tried the ECB82's 50-105 (long scale) for the first time today after using Rotosound Jazz77s 45-105 for years.

Love 'em ... I heard other talk about the high tension of Chromes, but even the 50-105 feels less to me than the 45-105 Jazz77 did. And deeper tone in my opinion (even the same guage E string).

Like OlSkwel 56 though, I found the silk wrap to be abnormally excessive. With my set, the blue thread for the E string is right in the nut slot! For the other strings, the threads stop just a hair before the nut. Very odd. More odd is that the E string doesn't even seem to be affected. Of course it would only be an issue playing the string open, but I'll remove some of the thread soon just because it's looks a bit goofy.

Other than that, I think I found my string for life ... finally.

I love Chromes on a P-bass for just about everything. Even though I prefer to use rounds for picking, I cannot be without a P-bass strung with chromes for some thumpin'

D'Addario strings are in my experience the shortest long scale strings out there. I am surprised to read that the regular long scale Chromes will fit on a string through the body 34" MIA Fender bass.

I have a regular bridge (not through the body) Precision right here with long scale Chromes on it, and taper starts about 3/4" past the nut. The set I have would definitely not fit going through the body.

I think I may have got lucky with my first set ... why they wouldn't be the same the Fender or Rotosound "long scale" though is a definite mystery to me. Strung-thru the body on my bass, the taper on the E string is just past the nut and, as as previouly mentioned, I had to remove some of the thread wrap since it was sitting in the nut slot.

What's worse is they don't seem to make the 50-105 in Super Long scale, but I love the strings so much than any other so I'm go to have to go thru-bridge on the other Fender bass I'm about to put them on. I'm sure my ears won't know the difference!

Edit from above: Looking at D'Addario's string tension guide for 50-105s, and the impact of scale length on tension, I now understand why they don't make them in super long scale ... that would be neck snappin' tension.

What I since realize too is that while stringing through the body results in the thread wrapping to extend into the nut slots, stringing through the bridge results in the thread wrap on the other end to sit on the saddles.

Still love them, preferred over my previous Rotosounds Jazz77s that actually fit properly .. settled on the 45-100 (long scale) Chromes though at the end of it all, going through the bridge. Super long 45-100 Chromes are better for through body.

Side note about these, they come a bit short on a 34" scale Jazz 24 when going through. But using the bridge without going through the bass corrected the problem giving me an extra 3/4". You've no idea how it worried me when the blue taper ended up on the nut, I didn't want to shave it off for some reason.

Love the feel but they still need some settling in.
