D'Addario Chromes on my Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
I just finished installing a set of chrome flats on my MIM Jazz Deluxe.
I took off some GHS Boomers, strings that I have been a fan of for a long time.

Man, I should have done this a long time ago!
Right now I am a very happy man.

I had to re setup the whole thing but it is totally worth it. The only thing I can say about the sound is "as smooth as melted Butter"!

I'm gonna go play it some more!

Congrats! I had the same feeling when I first switched to flats. I always felt my bass tone was too "sproingy", and when I switched I realized that flats were the bass tone I always heard in my head.

Another fan of flats on a Jazz here. I ran roundwounds on my Jazz ever since the disco era. When I switched to flats a couple years ago--I was hooked. It was the sound I always wanted. I think rounds are better for disco and slap, only.

I've always said that rounds make it sound like a piano anyways.

I have EB flats on my MIM Jazz and love them. Smooth, warm, easy to play. You can crank the bridge PU and still get a "nasty" sound. I have an Ibby SR500 I'm debating to put flats on it too.

Very subjective isnt it. I put a set of Chromes on since my last set of DR low riders are spent. Yuck. No growl. No throat. Harmonics are muted. I dont play disco either. Nickle rounds for me.

Subjective? Of course!
Everyone has their likes and dislikes.
I still have my "other" bass strung with rounds so I have options, but I haven't even touched it since making the swap on my jazz.

I am a rounds guy completely but having a P bass strung with D'Addario Chromes in the arsenal should be compulsary for every bassist.

Flats on a J sound nice but flats on a P sound incredible.

ive got d'addario flats on my fretted squier jazz, and rotosound flats on my fretless squire P. i have found that they are too tight and havnt got enough give on them, makes them arkward to play. sound wise they are alright but i do prefer round wounds. ive got them on me Squier vm fretted jazz and its just right for me. mabye a better guitar brings out the best in flatwound strings, orive just had two bad packs of strings?

Thumbs up

Actually, I just put a big ol' set of Chromes (50-105) on my fretted Squier VM Jazz last night. Sounds great! And the beauty of flats is that they obviously sound better as time goes on...

Normally being a jazz/rounds guy myself, the higher tension takes a bit of getting used to (especially that .050 G string), but the tone you get is well worth it.

To sum it up (said in my best Samuel L. Jackson voice):

"I got muthaf**kin' FLATS on a muthaf**kin' JAZZ!"

What gague are you running? I'm thinking either chromes super soft or La Bella deep Talkin' flats, but the low tension has me leaning towards the chromes. Also how do they sound compared to Fender flats or the TI flats?

Eh? You do know chromes are flats right? You wanted growl, throat from Chromes? No wonder you dont like em. If nickel rounds are what you were used to playin Chromes would be like mush next to em. Flats are muted to a degree and Chromes are one of the brightist flats on the market.

I just swapped out the Lo-Riders on my MIM active Deluxe for a nicely broken-in set of Chromes after reading this thread. I might end up liking this arrangement.
