Do they actually have a purpose?

For some reason, I just dont like the looks of silks on the end of my strings. Its cosmetic only, but I just dont like it.

Anyone know of any brands of flats that have no silks, or a clear or light color that cant really be noticed?

I get your point, but feel I have to suggest you place tone ahead of looks.

Gently go at the silk with a sharp knife. Or take them outside with a BBQ lighter & burn the silk off.

Not a "great sound".

Quite possibly for you & perhaps lots of others, but not for me.

So, the silk will come off fairly easy, and will not damage string in anyway?

Someone else here must have more experience, but I've had decent luck trimming some off; only perhaps 1/2" (through-body stringing with the "Long" length). Go slow, sharp knife, play safe.

Worst case is you have great-sounding strings you don't like the looks of.

Chromes will have higher tension than the TI flats. I have the same guage Chromes on a Fender Jazz and on a Stingray 5, and for some reason they feel like they have a quite a bit less tension on the Stingray--personally, I would find the TIs way too loose. (Fender flats, on the other hand, have way too much tension for me.)

Here's what the headstock looks like with the the Chromes silk wrappings:

Not that it seems to matter to the OP, but I wonder if different guages have different color windings? Mine's 50-105 and are definitely purple. Not even close to the picture above.

I like them both. But what sort of sound are you after?

My experience of Chromes is they are brightish for flats, average tension, & a stiffer feel than average. Very nice sound, fits well into a 2 guitar classic rock band.

I love TIs, & got used to the low tension much quicker than I thought. I found them brighter than Chromes, but I found they had a very broad "range of voice". Normally fingerstyle, I found TIJFs purely sucked for quick picking (presumably due to the tension).

Those in the photo are 45-100 (+130). I also have a P-bass with 50-105s. The silk on those is a bit darker and slightly more purple-blue.

You might find the above-mentioned Fenders do you fine: I don't know them.

I didn't like the Fender Stainless Steel flats either. I like the Chromes, but I prefer the Lakland Joe Osborns. Both are really good.
