Question D'Addario Chromes on string-thru Mustang?

Sign in to disble this ad
Is it okay to use Chromes on a string-thru Fender Mustang? Will the strings break at the bridge??

I know there are others that want to know, too.

The short-scale Chromes don't fit -too short. I think we'd need the medium scale set.

Chromes are fine strung thru-body. The only ones (that I know of) to worry about are the LaBella flats--they will sometimes break that way.

I used to use long scale Chromes on a short scale Musicmaster through the body. I used the .100 set, not the .105. Worked great.

I contacted don from D'Addario and he said he saw no reason for there to be a problem! Don post on here sometimes.

No issues so far with 3 different sets of Chromes.

Thanks for the responses!

The choices for a Mustang are quite limited because, although the scale of the bass is short, you actually require medium scale strings to fit properly. And there aren't too many string manufacturers that offer medium scale flats.

From what I can gather, here are our options for the Mustang: a) Rotosound Jazz 77 medium scale
b) Labella 760FL-MUS
c) D'Addario Chromes medium scale
d) Thomastik Infeld JF324 medium scale

My favourite flat is the GHS Precision flatwounds. But they don't make any in medium scale! :-(
The other brands listed are all beautifully made strings - they're just a little too bright sounding for my liking. The TIs are the closest to the sound I like.

For half-wounds: GHS Brite-flats

We checked the spec and it should work fine. If you have an issue - you can always reach me thru TB or at don.dawson@daddario.com.

Let's us know how it shakes out!

Normally, there is enough play in the string to allow for string thru installation. An easy way to verify - when you take a string off - measure from the top of the ball end to the kink in the string, where the string enters the tuner. That will tell you the actual measurement. So you'll know whether you need Long or Super Long. If I had to guess, i'd say long is fine.

Never mind this answer from before...for some reason I thought the OP was asking about a Jazz, not a Mustang. Sorry...

Similar question, different bass. I need a medium scale set but none in the vicinity and don't want to wait. Any problem with just cutting a set of long scales?

I don't think they'll fit into the tuners if you cut them too short, but I could be wrong on that. As far as Chromes on a string through, that's what I've got. Works fine. Good to know about the LaBellas, I was thinking about trying them, but maybe not.
