D'Addario Chromes too short for Hofner Ignition Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I started putting Short Scale Chromes on my Hofner Ignition but the blue silk wrapping on the G string starts about a 1/4" before the nut, so the wrap is actually on the nut instead of the unwrapped section. Does this mean it's too short? I thought the wrap should start after it already passes through the nut when restringing?

Yeah you'll need to peel back some of that silk so it clears the nut.

Labellas have the exactly opposite problem: silk arrive near the tuner and sometimes the nude metal rolls up on it.

Yeah, because of the tailpiece, many short-scale strings are too short for it... That's why there are a few string sets out there made especially for Beatle basses. You might have to try medium scale strings...

You're only in trouble if the string begins to taper before the nut.

Looks like you can carefully shave back (I use a razor blade) the silk.

I bought Hofners because they doesn't have that kind of problems and are the strings specifically born for this bass.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll try to shave it back today and continue putting on the rest of the strings. If I'm not thrilled with them I may just order the Rotosound TruBass 88 Strings...which I discovered after I had already ordered the Chromes.

You can cut a bit of length off of the G and the silk will clear the nut. I've had to do that with my Jazz and it works.
