Thumbs up D'addario or DR

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone,

I'm going to get some new strings for a gig I have coming up. I've heard a lot about D'addario and DR but I'm not sure which one to get yet. I'm playing indie rock and some instrumental so I want a nice warm sound. any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

Warm sound, you say? I'd try the D'Addarrio (did I spell that right?) nickel wounds in your gauge of choice. I think that'll be the XLs.

The product numbers for the D'Addario nickel wounds begin with EXL, actually. For a nice warm sound, I second the recommendation.

These two brands are some of the best strings out there. I think DAD's have a rounder sound all around (ss or n/s). The DR's are a tad more aggressive.

As far as feel I think the DR's are a little rougher while the DAD's have a softer feel.

I recommend either DAD nickels or the DR Sunbeams. Both sound great.

D'Addarios will give you a great warm sound. They last as long as most brands and are pretty customizable. You will probably like these strings -- I don't know many people that greatly dislike D'Addario Nickels. Prosteels, don't even touch them, they are INSANELY bright and clanky.

DRs will give you long life and "life" to the bass. Can't explain it, just try it. The notes jump out with a lot of clarity. DR Sunbeams warm up very well after a few weeks, without losing that "life".

These are 2 of my favorite string brands.

Don't forget Fender strings. The nickel plated or the pure nickels are warmer, in my opinion, than DR or D'Addarios. I have also noticed that Fender strings last longer at a certain sound than any other rounds in my experience.

Fender strings are very underrated in my opinion. A nice value, too.

Another Sunbeams recommendations. I switched from the XL strings.

I stopped using DR's due to inconsistency/QC problems. I mainly use D'Addarios ProSteels and XL's. I like the tension and tone with D'Addario.

I use the nickel Lo-Riders and they are excellent strings! Nice and smooth feeling. Warm sounding too as well. If you like lower tension though, the Sunbeams would be an excellent choice. DR Strings are compression wound, so they have a long life, and are easy on frets and fingerboards.

+1 on the D'Addario. I use the both the chromes and (against popular opinion) the half rounds. Great strings - warm and not too bright.

That is the first I've ever heard of anything like that. I've used DR strings for years and never noticed any such problems.
