D'Addario EXL E string problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought a set of D'Addario EXL 6 string long scale strings. I installed them on my Brice HXB-406 (34" scale), through the bridge except for the B string which had to be through the body or it wouldn't fit in the bridge (too fat).

Anyway, after tuning them all to pitch I noticed the E string played open was buzzing on the first fret. Looking closely I noticed that the outer wrap not only didn't make it all the way to the nut, it ended at the third fret! The string was long enough to have three wraps around the tuning post, but the outer wrap was several inches too short. It may not have even been long enough for the wrap to reach the nut on a short scale bass.

Has anyone seen this happen before on D'Addarios? I've used them for years and never had it happen, and I've got a second pack that I bought at the same time that I'm wondering if it has the same problem.

The weirdest thing I've ever seen with a set of strings.
