D'addario EXL170 Nickel Rounds (.045-.100) Soundclips

I happened to have some various soundclips with these strings so I figured I'd post them so people could find these clips with a search.

First clean:

Then dirty:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...songID=9702636

And heavy:

That's a Gibson SG Bass through a Marshall 2061x and Emperor 2x15" cabinet with Celestion speakers, mic'd with an SM57 and ran straight into a soundcard and on into audacity.

Oh I should also add that these strings have been wonderfully consistent for me, I've been using them for years. I have recently switched and bought some EXL220's however, same thing but .040-.095. Haven't put them on my bass yet but perhaps I can see if there's any difference in tone and record clips of it if anyone is interested.

Thanks. Love the grungy tone.
Please make some clips with the new strings when you get the chance.

I'm interested - just bought the 220s for my 5 string (using 170 now) - can't quite take the plunge for some reason and put them on - hoping the lighter gauge still sound similar.

Just installed EXL-170's on my P a few weeks ago. Switching from flats, they're a nice change from the higher tensioned Chromes. I really was leaning to the 160's, but their tensions were identical to the Chromes I already had on, so I went lighter.

I bought them based on a thread here a few weeks ago asking about Rounds for a Precision, and there was a lot of recommendations for the 170's, so I figured I'd give them a try. Still liking them a lot after two weeks, but curious to see how long they'll last before going dead.

Yeah I get the twin packs of these strings from musiciansfriend, 10-12.50$ per pack is a really good price for these strings, they sound great I think. I'm really hard on my strings and I sweat a lot because I rock so hard so my strings don't ever last long, but at that price I can't complain.

I'll see if I can find the time to do clips of the 220's to compare soon. Possibly on thursday I could do that.

I just ordered 4 twin packs of XL-170's from guitar center with a 20% off online coupon. Ended up getting 8 sets of strings for $84 bux. Thats about $10 bux a set....

Yup very nice. My brother used to use Elixir guitar strings but he's switched to D'addario too and buys them in bulk. Can save a lot of money.

The twin packs from D'Addario were a great idea. I've been appreciating the savings. I'd say the XLs can last me over a month, but it depends on how lively you like your strings and how often you play them.

Yeah the twin packs is a great idea. I think GHS was/is offering twin packs as well, and I've considered trying those again. I used to play GHS strings, but that was primarily because Larry Graham was playing them and I used to be a real Larry Graham wannabe.

I tried the XL220's for a bit on my Modulus VJ with Nordstrand NJ4SE's. The Nordy's emphasize the low end more than the traditional upper mid-range. The XL170's sounded good, but I missed a bit of the upper mids. The 220's had the upper mids, but lost a little of the bottom heft.....more like a traditional 'J' sound. I was surprised at the difference....at least on my bass it was really noticeable. Keep in mind my sound started out a little non-traditional. I had to adjust the action and re-intonate, though.........

Is there a 5 string version of these someone would recommend?

There's the five string set, you can get those in twin packs as well.
